About
Dimitrios Christaras (Δημήτριος Χριστάρας) is a Greek optical physicist working in biomedical and physiological optics and ophthalmic instrumentation. He is Head of Research & Development at Lightfield Medical (Minneapolis, USA), co-founder and Chief Technical Officer of Diestia Systems (Athens, Greece), and the founder of DC Photon Labs, the studio behind ReceiptoAI and TravelFitAI. He chairs the Greek Chapter of the Marie Curie Alumni Association and received the MCAA Best Innovator Award in 2026.
He holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Optics from the University of Murcia, where he worked with Prof. Pablo Artal at the Laboratorio de Óptica on light scattering in vision and imaging; an M.Sc. in particle physics from the Paris XI, VI and VII universities; and a Diploma in Applied Mathematics and Physical Sciences from the National Technical University of Athens. Before turning to vision science he worked on lattice QCD at the University of Cyprus.
He was a Marie Curie Early-Stage Researcher in the OpAL training network in Murcia, a research associate at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, where he remains an Honorary Research Associate, and a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellow (IRWAVE) and senior researcher at Athens Eye Hospital. His research covers double-pass imaging, intraocular scattering, macular pigment, peripheral refraction and the optics of intraocular lenses, and more recently deep-learning methods for wavefront retrieval. He is an inventor on European and US patents, has led projects funded by Eurostars, EIT Health and the Velux Stiftung, and teaches as a guest lecturer at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. His publications are listed on Google Scholar.
Beyond the lab
Off the optical bench, Dimitrios is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and a keen skier — though nowhere near black-belt level on the slopes — and, of course, a devoted cat person.
